Help! I Need AC Repair to Beat the Heat
Imagine this nightmare; it's summer, it's hot and the cold air you crave from your air conditioner is no longer flowing for your afternoon commute. Rolling down the windows just won't do it when you're crawling along down I-5 at just a few miles per hour. Even on the open road the AC keeps you much cooler that a down window, and it can also save you gas, comparatively. If the air conditioner in your vehicle has gone the way of the mammoths then you're likely going to need a technician to seek out information about what has happened and why. There are a few different things that can cause an AC unit to bite the dust.
What can cause air conditioning failure
There are a few main causes of AC failure. The clues that something is amiss are easy to notice, you know, the fact that no cold air, or sometimes any air for that matter, is blowing from the vents.
- Refrigerant Break Down - One of the most common reasons for an AC unit to fail is often referred to as black death. This occurs when the refrigerant begins to break down in the compressor. This will result in major wear and tear throughout the system since tiny metal particles that were produced as the compressor broke down will travel throughout the system in the refrigerant, resulting in the systems inability to not only produce cold air, but in the long run it won't be able to create any sort of airflow.
- Mold & Mildew - During a winter of not using the AC it gives mold and mildew the opportunity to grow inside the system. This can block air from entering the vents that lead to the passenger cabin, resulting in very weak airflow.
- Failed Mechanical Parts - There are a number of mechanical parts that may fail which would result in a lack of cool air. This includes a failed compressor, compressor clutch, blower motor, blower motor resistor, switch, fuse, relay, control module or others. If this is found to be the issue the part will need to be replaced.
- Freon Leak - A freon leak from a failed o-ring, hose or seal can be devastating. This could result in moisture damage throughout the system if it is not detected early enough by you or your mechanic.
AC repair can be tricky, as there are many things that go wrong. The above is just a short list, as other problems include vacuum leaks, clogged expansion tubes, bad fan and so on.
