Auto Maintenance to Prepare your Car for Winter
Winter in the PNW is coming, which means frozen windshields and chilly drives. While the weather can be difficult for our bodies to adjust to, it can also cause issues for cars. Colder temperatures and increased precipitation can cause a number of problems for all types of vehicles. As we move toward winter, take these steps to ensure that your car won't leave you stranded in the cold.
After racking up a bunch of extra miles over summer and fall you're going to want to ensure you get your car in for an oil change. The fresh oil will ensure that your car's engine is properly lubricated, which is critical when temperatures drop. During the oil change the technicians will also have a chance to inspect your vehicle for any potential issues that may cause trouble, especially in colder temperatures.
Healthy tires are key to a safe journey, especially on wet or snowy roads. Make sure your car's tires still have sufficient tread and are not damaged in any way. Check the sidewalls for chipping or cracking in the rubber before hitting the road this winter.
Inspect Air Filter
Dry summer air can hold a lot of dust and dirt and as your car drives down the road it will collect it in the air filter. Since we've made it through the dusty season, now is the perfect time to check to see if your air filter is clogged. If it is your car may not be able to get the oxygen it needs to run properly and will burn excessive fuel to compensate, which is a large waste of gas.
Check Spark Plugs
Check the health of your vehicle's spark plugs. If plugs became corroded or their gap is thrown off then your car will begin to run poorly and misfire, burning unnecessary amounts of gasoline and possibly leaving you stuck if the car won't run at all.
For maximum safety during the winter have a brake check performed to make sure that the whole system is in proper working order. The brakes are your car's best safety feature and they need to be checked annually to ensure they're healthy.
Lights and Wipers
Since the days get shorter and the rain and snow is returning, you'll want to ensure that all of your lights and your windshield wipers are in proper working order.
