No Gas: Common Fuel System Failures
In order for your car or truck to run properly it needs gas to get from the tank to the combustion chamber inside the engine. This is a pretty far journey, and a few things could disrupt it, which can cause a rough idle, stalling or even prevent your vehicle from starting. Should gas be unable to reach the engine when trying to start your vehicle it is likely the motor will turn over and over without firing. So what can cause this from happening? Well, first of all, is there gas in the tank? There is? Good. Now that we got that out of the way, here are three common fuel system failures.
The fuel filter is a small part with a big job. The gas you put into your tank isn't exactly purified. It can contain sediment and other contaminants that would be damaging to your engine if the fuel filter didn't remove them. After many miles on the road the filter can become clogged up, thus preventing the proper amount of fuel from entering the engine. Replacing the fuel filter should be part of routine maintenance is a fairly simple and inexpensive task on most makes and models of vehicles.
Depending on your car or truck the fuel injection system may have one port or multiple that sprays gasoline into the combustion chamber(s). Should the port become dirtied it may prevent the gas from getting into the engine. While the use of fuel injection cleaner can be helpful, if it's gotten to this point, the dismantling and cleaning of the device by a professional will likely be needed. Alternatively, if the alternator is going out the fuel injectors may struggle to operate as well, since the require a fair amount of electricity to do their job.
The fuel pump's job is exactly as it sounds. It's tasked with moving fuel from the gas tank to the injectors. A failed fuel pump will obviously result in a lack of flow between these two points. Replacing a fuel pump is not a difficult task on most cars and trucks.
