How to use your senses to detect car trouble
There are many different ways that your car may try and tell you that it is time for auto repair. Your car is equipped with many different sensors that constantly monitor the vehicle's operation and should the detect something is off it will generally trigger a dashboard indicator light, such as the check engine light, oil light or ABS light. However, not every problem onboard your car will result in the illumination of a warning light. You should constantly be on the lookout (or smell out, etc!) for car trouble by using all of your senses. The following are a few common signs you can pick up on with just your senses.
Smells are one of the most common ways of detecting an issue with your vehicle. Common problems that will generate smells include a coolant system leak, which will smell like maple syrup and a clutch that needs replacement will often produce a burning paper smell. Other issues that produce smells include mold in the AC and oil leaks that allow oil to burn off in the engine.
There are many issues that can create weird noises on your car that are a sign it is time for auto repair. A knocking noise under the hood often indicates worn engine bearings. Loud rumbling from the engine, especially during acceleration, is a sign of an exhaust leak. Grinding noises while braking is a sure sign it is time for brake repair and whining while shifting is a sign your car could benefit from transmission service.
Shakes and vibrations
If you ever notice your car or part of your car vibrating or shaking it is likely due for some sort of service. Shaking during braking is a sign of warped rotors. A gas pedal vibration may indicate a need for exhaust system repair. A shaky steering wheel likely means that it is time for a wheel alignment.
Of course there are many things you can see with your eyes that will make you want to get to the repair shop. Two of the most common visible clues are excessive exhaust smoke, which means your car's engine needs service, and leaks from your vehicle, as it uses a variety of fluids to operate its numerous systems.
