4 Common Reasons the Check Engine Light Comes On
Vehicles are equipped with sensors all over that monitor everything from fuel efficiency, air intake, and electrical charges to measuring the distance between you and the car in front of you. Many of these sensors monitor engine performance and if something amiss is detected by one of these sensors the check engine light will come on. Most of the time the issue is something that can be easily fixed, unless it is ignored. It is important to have the check engine light diagnosed as soon as it comes on to prevent bigger issues. Here are 4 common reasons the check engine light comes on.
Bad Catalytic Converter
The catalytic converter has a very important job. It converts harmful exhaust gases into less hazardous emissions. If something goes wrong with it, the light will come on. Unfortunately this is one of the more expensive fixes the light will warn you about, but regular maintenance should prevent you from having to deal with any issues with this part.
Faulty Ignition Coil
The ignition coil is subject to normal wear and tear over the years but when it needs repair or replacement the light will come on. If it doesn't get fixed soon it will mean your car won't be able to start once the coil fails completely.
Bad Mass Air Flow Sensor
This sensor monitors incoming air and calculates the right amount of air to mix with your gasoline for proper combustion. If the MAF sensor goes bad it can result in a drop of your fuel efficiency by up to 25 percent. This is generally a cheap fix.
Loose or Broken Gas Cap
To avoid having to take your vehicle to the shop for an unnecessary repair be sure that your gas cap is tight and not cracked. If you have a loose or faulty gas cap the gasoline fumes can evaporate out of the filler hose and set the light off.
