7 Common Problems that Trigger the Check Engine Light

An illuminated check engine light doesn't automatically mean that engine failure is imminent. But it's still best to get to the shop for computerized diagnostics so that any emerging engine issues can be pinpointed and addressed before they worsen and require more expensive repairs. Here are seven common reasons the engine light turns on.

Failing Catalytic Converter

To ensure that your vehicle is minimally polluting and is able to pass an emissions test, you'll need a healthy catalytic converter. Symptoms of a failing catalytic converter include poor acceleration, dark exhaust smoke, and a sulphurous odor.

Faulty Oxygen Sensor

Oxygen sensors monitor how much unburned oxygen is in the exhaust system. When there's a problem with an oxygen sensor, catalytic converter trouble can result.

Failing Mass Air Flow Sensor

MAF sensors oversee the quantity of incoming air and calculate how much fuel should be injected with it. Indications of a failing MAF sensor include herky-jerky acceleration, as well as stalling soon after you start your car.

Bad Battery/Charging System

A failing battery can cause low voltage at the computer, at which point the check engine light could be triggered.

Failing Spark Plugs

Failing spark plugs can cause a reduction in performance and fuel-efficiency. Cars manufactured after 2000 can commonly go 100,000 miles before they need plug replacement, while older vehicles tend to need new plugs more regularly.

Loose/Missing Gas Cap

Though it might sound strange, a loose or missing gas cap is sometimes the culprit for an illuminated check engine light. It's important that your gas cap is on tight so that gas doesn't evaporate before your engine gets the chance to run on it.

Bad Ignition Coil

Signs of an ignition coil problem include power loss and misfiring. With ignition coil trouble, you may not get the spark you need for your engine to fire up.
