8 Signs of Engine Trouble

When you first notice a symptom of engine trouble, you'll want to bring your vehicle to the shop for computerized diagnostics. By quickly taking action, you can potentially address the problem before it worsens and requires much more expensive repairs. Here are eight common signs of engine trouble.

Knocking Noise

Dangerously low oil can cause a repetitive knocking sound that arises from a lack of lubrication. Also, you may hear a knocking noise if the air-fuel mixture ignites on its own rather than by a spark plug, which is an issue that can cause significant problems.

Vibrating

With extremely low oil, metal-on-metal contact could cause vibrations to emerge from your engine.

Check Engine Light Turns On

An illuminated check engine light doesn't necessarily mean that your engine is about to fail. Still, you'll want to get to the shop for diagnostics so that any developing issues can be identified and addressed before they get worse.

Loss of Power

If you drive an older vehicle, there isn't necessarily cause for alarm if it has gradually lost a bit of power over the years. But a sudden and significant power loss could mean there's a serious problem, such as worn-out pistons.

Engine Stalls while Idling

This symptom suggests that there's a fuel delivery issue. Because stalling out in traffic can put you in harm's way, you'll want to make sure you take care of this issue as soon as you can.

Discolored/Excessive Exhaust Smoke

If exhaust smoke appears off in color, you'll want to try to identify the underlying problem. White smoke suggests that coolant is leaking internally. Black smoke is a sign that too much fuel is being burned up. Blue-tinted smoke is a symptom of an oil leak.

Burning Odor

If oil is being burned up, then inadequate lubrication could result. Consequently, moving engine parts could seize.

Overheating

Because overheating can lead to engine failure, it's important to always keep your cooling system in great shape. Leaks in the cooling system often lead to overheating.
