4 Symptoms of Suspension Failure

The suspension system in your car or truck has a few important jobs. While most people associate the suspension with ride comfort (and they aren't wrong), it is also involved with key safety components. The suspension system is designed to keep your vehicle upright while cornering, ensure all four wheels stay on the ground at all times to maximize braking power and help keep your car driving straight. If you encounter any of the following symptoms of suspension trouble be sure to visit your local auto repair shop.

One Corner Low

Does it appear as if one corner of your car is low, but the tire is not flat? This is a telltale sign that the suspension components in that corner of the car have failed. This can be due to damage or age, but in either case it is likely that you will have to provide your vehicle with new shocks.

Oily Shocks

Some times of shocks utilize a specialized oil to help absorb the bumps in the road. If this oil begins to leak due to a cracked casing or worn bushing, the vehicle's ride will become less stable and more uncomfortable. If you suspect suspension trouble run a rag across the shocks and see if you can notice any fluid leaks.

Rolling Sensation

The antisway bar is tasked with transferring the vehicle's center of gravity while cornering in order to prevent rollovers. If it ever feels like your car's about to roll and you get a stomach dropping feeling while going over small hills or around bends, it may be time for suspension repair.

Excessive Bouncing

Does your car seem to bounce a lot after going over a bump? This is a tell tale sign of suspension trouble. There is a simple test that you can perform to test the suspension. Simply press on the hood or trunk of the vehicle to get it to start bouncing up and down. Once you stop pushing on the vehicle it should return to a stable position within 3-4 bounces. Any more than that and it is likely time for suspension repair.
