Is it Time for Engine Repair? 4 Signs that Say Yes
Isn't it amazing that the turn of a key will get your car's motor pumping. Well, as long as it is in healthy condition anyway. The engine is what powers your vehicle and if it is not in good shape, due to a neglect of maintenance or standard high mileage wear and tear, there is a chance that you'll soon be facing extensive engine problems. In order to avoid a breakdown or the need for a complete engine rebuild it is always important to pay attention to signs of engine trouble. The problems can appear in many different forms. The following are 4 common symptoms that should be your first clue that a trip to the auto repair shop is necessary.
Engine Knocking Noises
A knocking noise that comes from under the hood that speeds up and down with the RPMs of the motor likely indicates worn engine bearings. These bearings support the moving parts of the engine and will fail if they are not properly lubricated. Anytime a strange noise occurs you should have it checked out, or else you could be facing the need for a major engine rebuild or even a replacement.
Excess Exhaust Smoke
A common sign that there is internal engine trouble will come in the form of colored exhaust smoke. Judging by the color you can often tell what issue is occurring. Black smoke indicates that there is too much gasoline being burnt up in the combustion chamber, which can result in a number of internal engine issues. Blue smoke means that an oil leak is allowing oil to be burnt up, putting the vehicle at risk of insufficient lubrication. White smoke is an alarm for cooling system failure. Coolant being burnt up means the car could overheat at anytime. Any increase in exhaust smoke should be your queue to head to the auto shop.
Decrease in Engine Performance
If you notice a drop in performance, such as a struggle for power during acceleration, a rough idle or a decrease in average fuel economy you'll want to get to the repair shop as soon as possible. It may be something small causing the trouble such as a clogged air filter or fuel filter, but a bigger problem may be at hand.
Check Engine Light
As soon as your check engine light comes on you should get to a local auto shop that can run diagnostics. There are many problems that can cause this little light to come on, but many of them are relatively easy fixes.
