What are Common Signs of a Suspension Problem?
To optimize handling and safety, you'll want to make sure your suspension is in great shape. When you first notice a sign of a suspension issue, you'll want to bring your vehicle to the shop for an inspection. Here's a look at six signs of suspension trouble.
"Nose Diving" Sensation
Worn-out shocks can make it feel like your vehicle is lunging forward at a downward trajectory when you hit the brakes.
If the road is visibly smooth, but it feels like you're hitting bumps, then suspension trouble is likely brewing.
As long as you're following the speed limit, it shouldn't seem like you're drifting when you take sharp corners. However, if you do feel this sensation, then there's a good chance that a failing suspension is to blame.
Fails the Bounce Test
There's an easy test you can do that will help you figure out if your shocks/struts are shot. First, make entirely sure that your vehicle is securely parked. Next, go to the front end and press down with all of your power. Rock it a couple of times and then let go. Then, head around back and do the exact same thing on the vehicle's rear. Upon releasing, if your vehicle rocks more than two or three times, then it'll be best to have a mechanic take a look at your suspension.
Bald Spots on Tires
When shocks/struts fail, uneven tire wear can result. This can consequently lead to the formation of bald spots.
In all likelihood, your shocks will need to be replaced if you can see that oil has started to leak out onto them.
